I was watching HGTV a couple of nights ago. The hosts of the show had been hired by a wealthy, influential family to renovate their home. It was a mansion. Perfectly good items in the home were ripped out and replaced with newer, shinier things.
Timeless. That’s the word the hosts used at the end of the show when the final reveal was underway. This piece is timeless. This marble is timeless. This flooring is timeless. The home now feels timeless. Furnishings and accessories all contributed to the timelessness of the space.
All I could see was trendy.
In 10 years or less all of the beautiful, new things in that home will be outdated and will probably be replaced with something else.
Not that renovating a home is bad, we just finished our own renovation, but trendy is being sold to us as if it can create timelessness.
It’s a lie. Trendy can’t be timeless no matter how hard it tries. Lies can’t be truth no matter how beautifully packaged they are. There is no timelessness in things that rot, or that moths can eat or that fire can destroy.
It’s funny because I told someone the other day I was having trouble finding a plain, frameless mirror for the bathroom. They responded that it’s probably hard to find because it doesn’t exist anymore. It’s not trendy.
Can I ask you to take the timelessness test? It’s very simple. Ask yourself this question: will this circumstance or situation be with me when I enter the presence of the Lord?
Trendy wants you reading all the latest self-help books you can get your hands on. Trendy wants you trying the latest gimmick. Trendy wants to dazzle you with the shiniest trinkets and newest styles. It wants you to spend all of your time and money on its fleeting pleasures and quick fixes. It will blind you to the fact that your days have been numbered and they are moving very quickly. It will suck eternity from your mind.
Fix your eyes on Jesus.
The Word of God is timeless, your circumstance is not. It sounds too simple. It almost sounds trite, like it doesn’t cover enough ground or go deeply enough into your wounds and yet scripture promises us that if you seek the Lord you will find him as long as you seek him with all of your heart.
I’m praying for you today.
I pray that as you focus on the Lord he will reveal himself to you in ways you never could have imagined. I pray that the presence and aroma of Christ completely fills your life so that every falsehood pretending to be the truth will be exposed and rooted out. And most of all I pray that you will live each day in the expectation and joy of spending eternity with Christ.
