A slow, steady rain has fallen in the past couple of days. The dust has settled. The grass is lush. I’m excited because now I don’t have to water the new trees we planted – yay!
soul thirst
Without timely rains, the ground dries up and eventually nothing grows. Our souls wither without consistent nourishment as well.
Are you spiritually thirsty? Has your joy and purpose slowly drifted away from the true Source of life, leaving you feeling shriveled inside?
Jesus knows we struggle with periods of drought and so in John 7:37 he says, “Let anyone who is thirsty, come to me and drink.” The Lord gently reaches out to us with a cup of living water, overflowing with an invitation into his presence.
5 signs
How can you tell if your soul is thirsty?
- restless – something’s missing even when you can’t pinpoint what it is
- numb – it’s hard to draw emotion out of yourself, whether joy or sorrow, you’re just going through the motions
- disengaged – it’s hard to focus, you’re not vested in anything of importance, God feels distant and unanswering
- overly stimulated – you’re dependent on distractions like food, gossip, endless scrolling to make it through the day
- purposeless – you wonder what the point of life is, why you were created, what you can offer of significance
the source
Scripture rehydrates our parched souls.
CS Lewis says this, “Look for yourself, and will find only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin and decay. But look for Christ and you will find him, and with him, everything else.”
soak it up
Take a few moments to soak in these verses:
Jeremiah 31:25 “For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish” (ESV)
Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (NIV)
Isaiah 58:11 “The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy you needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden; like a spring whose waters never fail.” (NIV)
Quench your parched soul with his Spirit and you’ll never be thirsty again.
